In response to Japan's aggression against French Indochina, the US imposed an embargo of oil and metals, which Japan needed for its military. The Japanese then decided to get these resources by conquering the nations of Southeast Asia, which possessed the raw materials Japan needed, but were threatened by the US Pacific Fleet in Pearl Harbor, Hawai'i. This is why Japan attacked Pearl Harbor: to ensure that the US navy could not interfere with their conquest of Southeast Asia.
