Well at Nehemiah we're told at chapter 0ne verse 2 that Hanani, one of his brothers, arrived with other men from Judah, and I asked them about the remaining Jews who had escaped the captivity, and also a out Jerusalem. Verse 3" The walls of Jerusalem are Rosen down, and it's gates have been burned with fire." Verse 4 "As soon as I heard these words, I sat down and began to weep and mourn for days, and I kept fasting and praying before the God of the heavens. Verse 5 I said: "O Jehovah, the God of the heavens ,. Verse 6 " pleasd, let your ear be attentive and your eyes open to listen. So according to chapter 2 verses 1- 6 he asked the King Artaxerxes for permission to go back and rebuild the walls of Jerusalem. Because it was very distressing to him. And he wanted to do something about it.

Nehemiah was appointed to be the cup-bearer to the king of Persia (Nehemiah 1:11, 2:1). How and why he was chosen is not stated. Like Ezra, Daniel and Mordecai, he was one of the greatest of the Jewish Torah-sages at the time. See also:
