A "newspaper" is called so because it is a publication that features news on current events and is typically printed on paper. The term originated from the fact that it was a medium for spreading news in printed form, hence the combination of "news" and "paper."

I was wondering this, that's why I found your question.

While toying with this idea, I realized that many forms of art are created on a media (canvas, paper, film).

My take on it is that the news today is referred to as the "media" on to which a reality (for their viewers/readers) is created and disseminated.
