The patriots achieved their victories at Trenton and Princeton with surprise. George Washington crossed the Delaware River to attack the Hessian garrison at Trenton. The Hessians were unprepared for the attack and were routed. When British General Cornwallis attacked with his army, in order to trap the Continental Army, Washington lit fake campfires in order to trick the British into thinking that his men were still in Trenton. Then, Washington secretly led his army north to attack Princeton, which Cornwallis had weakened in order to attack Washington's army at Trenton.
Victories at the Battles of Trenton and Princeton in late 1776 were pivotal for the weary Continental Army. These surprise attacks against Hessian and British forces not only resulted in significant tactical wins but also revitalized the morale of the troops and the support of the colonists. The successes demonstrated that the American forces could achieve victory, reinvigorating their resolve to continue the fight for independence.
The Patriots were successful at the Battle of Trenton due to a combination of surprise, strategic planning, and the element of timing. Led by General George Washington, they launched a bold attack on the Hessian forces on the morning after Christmas, catching them off guard and unprepared. The harsh winter weather and the element of surprise allowed the Continental Army to achieve a decisive victory, boosting morale and reinvigorating enlistments. This victory proved pivotal in turning the tide of the Revolutionary War in favor of the Patriots.
