Excel was not the first spreadsheet application. VisiCalc was the first, which came out in 1979. Excel was not launched until 1985. Between VisiCalc and Excel there were also other spreadsheet applications, most notably Lotus-123.
Prior to VisiCalc, there would have been calculators and other ways of calculating things on a computer. The electronic spreadsheet was based on the paper-based spreadsheet, which business people used to make calculations. So there were many ways of doing calculations before Excel.
MS-Excel is a powerful worksheet & you calculate , syncronize many hard calculation, so MS-Excel is called Excel.
Many formulas are mathematical, so if you can't do maths on paper, then you won't be able to do it in Excel.
