Counting by humans is much older than the oldest civilizations. The oldest surviving proof of people keeping count (by making scatches on a piece of bone) date from 25,000 years ago.

When some 4,000 years ago the earliest civilizations emerged, tokens and the good ol' abacus were used to keep count.
