Typically they tried to do as much work as possible when the sun was up, and be asleep when it was dark. Of course they had torches, kerosene lamps, fires, etc to see in the dark before electricity.
They didn't have appliances that required electricity since they hadn't been invented yet. As for lighting, they had candles and, later on, gas lighting fixtures. However, they had the habit of getting up when the sun rose and going to bed when it set, or shortly thereafter. They didn't stay up past 3 AM playing Xbox. Candles cost money, so if they didn't need to stay up, they went to bed.
