Best Answer

Some religions did not want the people to read The Bible for themselves because they were afraid that they would find out that that religion was teaching the wrong doctrines. And some times that is the case. No matter what church you attend it is a good idea to read and see God's word for yourself. The pastor may unintentionally make a mistake and therefore you may be led in the wrong direction, even though it was a mistake. It is a good thing if you make reading the Bible a habit. See the Word for yourself.

The Bible is most often read in church. The pastor or priest reads the Bible out (this is called a reading) sometimes people go in a church and read out of a bible when they are going through a hard time. Could you go to hell if you dont go to church that much but you do read your bible?

You might be given hell by overly religious Christians, but no, you won't go to Hell if you don't go to Church. Even not reading the Bible won't make you go to Hell. Jesus Christ saved you. Not going to church, and not reading the Bible. Follow Jesus Christ, not a Christian religion.

How did the arrival of printing technology in the west profoundly destabilized the Catholic Church as the dominant institution of its day?

This answer assumes you mean, " ... profoundly destabilized the Church?" In my view, printing destabilized the Church by making the Bible more readily available to lay persons, especially in their native languages. When people began reading the Bible, it was inevitable that they would often come to conclusions about faith and practice that differed from Church teaching. This destabilized the Catholic Church because many more people were able to read the Bible. When only church leaders were able to read the Bible they were able to put in their own opinions and tell the people what they wanted them to do. When the masses got their hands on the Bible and read it for themselves, they discovered that a lot of what their church leaders were saying was actually not from the books.

Why did the church forbid people to read the Protestant Bible?

At this period in history (commonly referred to as the 'Reformation' or 'Pre-Reformation') , the only church that existed was what is now called the Roman Catholic church. During the time, the church services and the entire Bible were all in Latin. Anything for the educated class, such as treatises and official documents, were in Latin as well. Of course, few people actually spoke Latin, and this became a problem for the soon-to-be reformers (like Hus, Wycliffe, and Luther) who believed that the Bible was to be read by poor and rich alike, in the vernacular, meaning the language of the people. The translation of the Bible in the common language is also called the Protestant Bible. The church forbade people to read the Bible because of many reasons. First, it meant that the people would find the faults in the church by comparing the church teachings to the Bible's teachings. These faults included the selling of indulgences, which increased the church's bank account. Obviously, the church officials disapproved of that. Second, the church officials believed that this would degrade God's word and that it could only be God's Holy, infallible word if it was in it's original language. Add the two reasons together and you can see that the church did not want the people reading the Bible for themselves.

Why do you think the Church did not want the Bible translated into the vernacular?

The Church wanted the ordinary people to rely on the clergy for their knowledge of the Bible. This not only meant that the Church could prevent the people from raising questions about the accuracy or authenticity of the Bible, it also meant that people felt dependent on the clergy.

Why was it threatening to Rome that Martin Luther translated the bible?

Up until that time Rome had withheld the scriptures from the common people even banning the reading of the few translations in common languages. The main translation used by the Church was a Latin translation available only to the clergy. After the reformation the Bible was translated into many different languages and people could see that what the Bible said and what the Church said was different

How would the Catholic Church like its readers to read the Bible?

Roman Catholic AnswerThe Church always promotes Bible reading. Being a Benedictine Oblate, the particular form of reading the Bible that I was taught was Lectio Divina, which is a slow, meditation reading of the Bible. You might only read one sentence, and if that is enough to start your meditation, go with it. The Church, herself, has always included the Bible in the Mass. As a matter of fact, that is what the Bible started out as - the readings for Mass. It wasn't until the printing press was invented (and universal literacy) that private people could own a Bible. Previously a single Bible would take over 500 sheep to make the parchment, and then several monks working for years to produce one Bible, they were hideously expensive. But now that we can all own a Bible, the Church wants you to be familiar with it. You are already familiar with a lot more of it than our protestant brothers, as there is nearly always an Old Testament reading, and a Gospel reading at every Mass. But one should read it with the eyes of faith, asking God for understanding. We are not to use the Bible to try and discover doctrines, and such. We are to read the Bible to develop our spiritual life. The current Enchiridion of Indulgences, in grant # 50 extends to all the faithful a partial indulgence "who with the veneration due the divine word make a spiritual reading from Sacred Scripture. A plenary indulgence is granted, if this reading is continued for at least one half an hour.
