In the 1300s there was no medication and no one knew what was happening. They whipped themselves because they thought God was punishing them for their sins, and God would spare them. Sometimes they would cut open the buboes (the black swellings). Another cure was to place a toad on the buboe until it blew up. Don't worry, if you do get the plague, it is easy to treat now.

They did not have a cure, and they tried many things, but nothing worked well enough to be used widely.

People with the plague were isolated, so it would not spread. In many places imports were prohibited so tainted food could not bring the plague in. In some walled towns, the drawbridge was raised until the plague passed. Mostly, the sick were neglected and either lived or died on their own. Some were tended by monks and nuns, and, interestingly, there have been studies indicating that the monks and nuns did not have increased chance of getting the plague.

Some people carried flowers or wore strong perfumes, they thought the smell would keep the disease away while others drank hot drinks because they thought they would sweat out the disease. Some would use leeches to bleed the victim so they would remove the infected blood. Quite a few smoke tobacco because they thought the smoke would make the disease stay away. It was rumored that dogs and cats spread the disease, so the Lord Mayor ordered all the dogs and cats destroyed. Apparently over 40,000 dogs were killed and 200,000 cats were also killed. They also prayed a lot and the priest made them pray. People used to stick live chickens under their arm pits to cure Black Death but it never worked.

They put frogs on the boils and waited until the frogs had sucked out all of the liquid then they would explode. This is only one of the ways that they tried to cure the Black Death.

People used very strange methods to cure people. Like putting a chicken on the buboes. And putting toads on the buboes. But nothing worked. They eventually died. Hope it helped a bit.
