Majdanek was a "dual camp". One part was an extremely harsh concentration camp, where many inmates died from malnutrition while having to do heavy manual work. (It is regarded by some as one of the worst camps. Some guards tortured prisoners for 'sport' and some inmates were also clubbed to death by SS men). The other section was an extermination camp, where new arrivals were gassed soon after arrival. The museum at Majdanek estimates the number of inmates killed at 78,000. (Many reference works give a much higher figure, usually about 360,000. This figure was the one issued by the Soviet authorities soon after the camp was liberated in 1944. The figure was based on calculations and assumptions about the usage of the gas chambers and crematorium, not on documentary evidence about the number of transports that actually arrived at the camp or similar evidence).

Conditions at Majdanek were appalling. The camp had two sections: one was a very harsh concentration camp.
