Alexander Graham Bell was connected to some American University and studied audio and electrical issues. It could have been on or near the American West coast. He had a Deaf family member on a nearby island which was used for Deaf colonies in those days - towards the end of the 19th century. His aim was to help his Deaf family member stuck on the island by developing a kind of a primitive hearing aid.
As soon as he had success with his experiments, he realized the impact it could have on spoken communication between hearing people!
So one could say that the 1st telephone was invented as a byproduct of a hearing aid!
This story is confirmed in a book on the life of Helen Keller (born in 1881) who's father contacted Alexander in his search for help for his Deaf and blind daughter.
