Prior to tooth brushes being available one very effective method for keeping teeth clean was the use of small wooden sticks pounded or chewed at the end to form a fine brush that is able to reach every part of the teeth. as a mater of fact these seemed to be more effective then most modern tooth brushes.

The most common method was to chew the end of a green twig from a tree with flexible wood, usually birch, and then used the frayed end as a brush. The type of wood was important because most woods would shatter when chewed, as opposed to fraying. If they wanted a more thorough cleaning, they could put a small amount of sand on their teeth before brushing to create more friction and thus removing more particles. After brushing, they would often chew or make herbal teas from plants like wild mint or wintergreen.

they used salt for toothpaste, which doesn't taste very good, but is actually better for your teeth than toothpaste. baking soda works quite well and will also whiten teeth.
