NATO's role (when first founded) was to protect its member countries from the USSR. (Now Russia.) Since the USSR no longer exists, NATO's role is to protect the national sovereignty of its member countries.
They where part of the Cold War, because they were part of NATO, which is basically a defence pact of allies, which includes Canada, France, Britain, Russia, etc.
Because Germany declared war on Serbia, russia mobilized its army to protect Serbia due to an old alliance
It posed a threat to Soviet military supremacy. With this combined threat the soviet government was forced to expand their own military force to keep pace with the combined powers of the NATO pact. This lead to huge portions of Russia's GDP being poured into military expense. This later crippled them when their purchases wore out and broke down. Now Russia's military force is but a fraction of its Soviet pinnacle.
NATO wants Ukraine and Georgia to join. Russia doesn't like that.

Hungary!! its not Russia
Well yes and no. NATO was formed after WWII as an alliance against communist agression of countries in Europe that considered themselves allies of the United states. The communists formed the Warsaw Pact which was the communist countries that condidered themselves aligned with Russia to protect themselves from aggression by the west. So they are not really for or against each other. It is more like they have agreed to disagree and keep a close eye on each other.
Russia
NATO says it's used to guard against limited missile attacks. Russia thinks it might be used to attack west.
NATO was formed to protect Europe and the United States from communism including the Soviet Union and Communist China.

Russia aCTUAlly iTS TURkEY
Russia is not, has never been, and most likely never will be, a member of NATO.
Ukraine is a neighbor to Russia, and Russia is a much larger and more powerful country than Ukraine. Historically Russia has dominated Ukraine. In order for Ukraine to maintain its independence, it wants to ally itself with the Western World. If Ukraine is allied with the West, it will not have to worry about Russia attempting to dominate its foreign policy because it will have the protection of NATO.
