How did Indiana Jones get the scar on his chin?

In the movies, Indiana Jones received the scar on his chin when he was a teenager. In the beginning of the Last Crusade, you will see that he used a whip for the first time, and wasn't very talented in using it. When he whipped it out, he accidentally lashed his chin with the end of the whip, thus giving him his scar.

In real life, Harrison Ford has explained the scar by relating the story of getting into an accident while driving his first car. He said that while driving his first car back when seatbelts were still new, he reached back to pull the shoulder strap down, became distracted, and swerved off the road and into a telephone pole.

There is a book in the official book universe (A Tale of Two Brothers) that tells a story about how Scar got his scar but according to its author's official web site, it's his original story, as in not Disney's story - and thus nothing more but some random guy's own vision based on the film.
