Because the North was hungry for some good news, and 'Atlanta Falls' made a heck of a headline.

This was ironical, because Atlanta was not Sherman's target, and it had little strategic value. His orders were to destroy the Army of Tennessee, which he had consistently failed to do.

Fortunately he carried enough credibility with Grant to be allowed to follow his own alternative strategy, which was to ignore the Army of Tennessee, and conduct punitive raids on the rich farm country of Georgia, devastating civilian morale and bringing the Confederate armies close to starvation.

Why did the Homestead Act help the reelection of US President Lincoln in 1864?

The Homestead Act was a popular program signed into law by US President Abraham Lincoln. For only $12, people who wanted to settle out west could have 160 acres of land if they promised to remain there and work the land. It was not a real factor in Lincoln'd reelection, but it added to him ,more votes over Democrat George B. McClellan in the 1864 presidential election.

How did General William T Sherman help President Lincoln's successful reelection to the US presidency in November of 1860?

When Union General Sherman forced the surrender of Atlanta, Georgia, it was a major success as the large Georgia city was among other thins a large railway hub linking together main cities and ports in the South. All during the Summer of 1864, Lincoln was concerned that the Republican party would not re-nominate him for the November US presidential election. In fact at one point that Summer, John Fre'mont was a possible Republican candidate. The fall of Atlanta was widely hailed by the Northern press and was key to Lincoln's successful reelection against Democrat, George B. McClellan.

What was one step President Lincoln took to help his reelection in 1864?

President Lincoln believed that if was not reelected in 1864, it would likely end the North's desire to carry on the war. Lincoln wanted to avoid this as much as possible. One step he took was to pressure field commanders to allow troops from Indiana and other states that did not allow troops to vote in the field to grant sufficient furloughs so that soldiers could return home to vote.

What was the political motive of US President Lincoln in supporting the Red River campaign?

The Red River campaign proved to be a disaster for the Union in the Spring of 1864 in Louisiana. General Henry Halleck supported the campaign for military reasons, however President Lincoln saw it as a political measure. Lincoln wanted to see a "free state reorganization of Louisiana" in the shortest amount of time as possible. If successful, it would help reduce the South's power and score a political victory for the Republicans and help his reelection.

Man took control of US Grants army after Grant's advancement 10 1864?

Sherman. But he didn't take control of Grant's army. Grant concentrated all his forces into two armies, and gave one of them to Sherman, ordering him to destroy the Army of Tennessee. Taking Atlanta was not a major objective. When he failed to destroy that army, Sherman opted for the capture of Atlanta instead, because it would sound like big news in the North and help Lincoln win the election. After that, of course, he devised an entirely new strategy - the March to the Sea.

How did the union victories help Lincoln win the reelection?

Yes, Sherman's victories at Atlanta and his March to the Sea convinced northern voters that the war was winnable and that the end was near. The Atlanta victory came in time to boost Lincoln's stature just before the November elections. Previously, Lincoln's prospects looked bleak. He bemoaned the thought of losing to McClellan who was running on a peace platform, promising to negotiate with the South.

Why did Lincoln give Grant permission to destroy the civilian infrastructure?

Because Grant carried high credibility with Lincoln. And Sherman carried high credibility with Grant. It was Sherman who saw that punitive raids on Georgia would weaken the rebellion, help to starve the Southern armies, and show the outer world that the Confederacy was on its last legs.

What was one action President Lincoln took to help his chances in the 1864 presidential elections?

The 1864 presidential elections were crucial for the North to win the war. President Lincoln believed that if he lost the election, the Union would be defeated. To help secure his victory, he applied pressure on his generals to allow troops from Indiana and other states that did not permit voting in the field. He wanted loyal Union soldiers to be granted furlough to leave their posts and return home to vote.

Was the Battle of Gettysburg the turning point of the war?

Gettysburg has come to be regarded as the turning point of the war, but this is largely a postwar perspective. It was not seen that way at the time, and the Confederates could still have attained their war aim for at least fourteen months after Gettysburg. But Gettysburg has such drama involved ("the high water mark of the Confederacy") that it lends a sense of fate and destiny, not to mention dramatic tension, to post-war publishing on the war.I've always thought, as the Confederates did at the time, that it was the capture of Atlanta, September 1, 1864, which made their cause hopeless. Lincoln shared this belief. In late August 1864 Lincoln thought he would lose the election of 1864, and had his cabinet officers sign a paper folded so they could not read what was written on it. The paper was a pledge to help Lincoln do everything possible to win the war in the interval between the election and the swearing-in of Lincoln's successor. New Presidents were sworn in on March 4 in those days, so there would have been four more months after the election to try to finish off the Confederacy. Lincoln's opponent in the election was a general he had fired, George McClellan, and the Democrat platform was for an end to the war and a negotiated peace with the south. This would have allowed the south what they were fighting for, to be a separate nation. In August 1864, when Lincoln was gloomily considering his prospects for winning a second term from the war-weary northern people, the military campaigns of 1864 had been underway for four months. Sherman in Georgia and Grant in Virginia appeared no closer to attaining anything decisive, despite truly monumental and horrific casualty lists into the tens of thousands racked up since resuming active fighting at the start of May. These were some of the worst months of the war - the fighting had been continuous and the toll was worse than anything seen so far, with nothing, it seemed to the average person, to show for it.All this changed overnight with Sherman's capture of Atlanta. Lincoln felt, almost certainly with great accuracy, that it was this which assured his reelection. The Rebels knew that with Lincoln still in office the war would go on without letting up, and that soon they would be at the last ditch.

When general sherman's troops cut a swath of destruction and pillage through Georgia?

November and December 1864, in which time they were incommunicado, because all the telegraph wires had been cut. When they reached Savannah, and made contact with the US Navy, Sherman sent a joke-signal to Lincoln, offering him the city of Savannah as a Christmas present.

What helped the union achieve victory?

Much bigger population from which to recruit. Success of the blockade of Southern ports. Lincoln learned to select and deploy good Generals; Davis never did. Some long-awaited victories (Atlanta, Winchester, Mobile) that were just in time to help Lincoln win the 1864 Election.
