He did not discover Buddhism, nor did he try to start a religion. What he discovered was a way to enjoy life and end its suffering. This happened about 2,500 years ago in Budhgaya, India.
this is kinda obvious but a guy named buddha. well not really his name is prince sidartha. basicly he was wondering why people are suffering sickness death and stuff like that, so he created a religion. that's when was called the buddha.
