My Father earned his by saving the life of his Captain in WWII in the town of Saarlautern, Germany. His Captain was jumped by a German soldier on November 21, 1944.

My Father, being a former heavyweight boxer, hand-to-hand knife fighting specialist dispatched the German soldier and saved his Captains life. That is one way.
