They sent grenades, bombs, gas bombs and pretty much anything explosive they could get their hands on. They also shot them with rifles etc.

In WWII soldiers would hide behind their dead horses to protect themselves from the enemy. They would have a less chance of getting hit and so they had more chance of survival. Also the enemy wouldn't see them on the ground so it was easier for the soldiers to kill their enemy.

Soldiers in battle were expected to be nice and respectful to their enemies. The goal was to capture your enemy and make them surrender, not to kill them (although many did die). It wasn't until World War II that European warfare changed and total war was introduced, where citizens became targets.
