Read On Killing: The Psychological Cost of Learning to Kill In War and Society by Lt. Col. Dave Grossman:Up until the end of World War II, the vast majority of soldiers (between 75 and 95%) have refused to kill.
First, soldiers don't necessarily go off to war to "brutally kill another human being". I've gone "off to war" twice and haven't fired a shot. Preachers bless the soldiers in hopes that they will be protected by God and in the event that they must fight for their lives, they are the ones that go home, not their enemy. Also, the original meaning of kill was murder. God did not want people to murder each other but if it is in self defense or defense of another, it's ok.
