The rivalry between the NFL and the AFL grew during the 60's to the point that both leagues needed to crown a real football champion as the AFL said that they were as good as the NFL. The NFL at first brushed it off but public clamoring(along with rumors) made them change their mind and show the upstart new league(the AFL) that the NFL was a superior league. This lead to the first "Super Bowl", mainly to determine bragging rights. the NFL won the first two Superbowls but after the NY Jets of the AFL won the third it showed the world that parity had come to pro football. To stop the competition for players between the two leagues a merger was stuck by the leagues. It put a lid on spiraling player contracts for a while. That was one of the basics that prompted the merger. A player would be drafted by an NFL team while also being drafted by an AFL team. He would then entertain offers from both teams, and more often than not, sign with the team who offered more money. As previously stated, the merger ended that altogether.
