Tarquinius Superbus (the last king) was overthrown because he was a heavy handed tyrant. The Romans decided to do away with the monarchy and replace it with a republic to prevent rule by one man which could lead to the re-occurrence of tyranny. They did so by establishing two rulers (the consuls) who would counterbalance each other and whose term was just one year so that no one could monopolise power.
The republic meant liberty to the Romans. For the next 200 years the worse accusation that could be raised against someone was that of trying to become a king. Manlius Capitolinus was accused of trying to become a king and was sentenced to death in 385 BC because he used his personal fortune to help the poor. He was accused of trying to gain popular support to seize power for himself.
The Roman Republic was established during a rebellion which overthrew Tarquinius Superbus, the last king of Rome. The Romans decided to do away with the monarchy to prevent the return of tyranny.
