A fashion designer has many more job duties than what the general public may think. Fashion designers are a part of almost every aspect of introducing new fashions, not just creating the basic design. Fashion designers are also involved in fashion showings, or fashion shows, which are popular ways for designers to show their designs to the public. A fashion designer will usually begin with the basic design of a garment. He or she may sketch, sew, or somehow show the vision which begins the design. This first prototype is changed and refined many more times as the designer creates a toile, or model of the design in some inexpensive fabric, like muslin or calico. Next, a card pattern, or cardboard pattern, is made, with each section of the garment made from pieces of cardboard and put together to make sure that everything fits. Next, the fashion designer chooses colors and materials, and has the garment made.
As far as I'm aware, you cannot study Fashion Design at Cape Town University (UCT). However, it is offered at Cape Peninsula University of Technology (CPUT aka Cape Tech.) If you have a look at their website, you can calculate the fees per year for yourself. http://info.cput.ac.za/prospectus/qual.php?q=246&f=4 I've made a brief calculation, and it looks like the total fees for a National Diploma in Fashion is around R32,000.
