The Spanish Conquistadors, in 1521. The official name of the city was Mexico-Tenochtitlan. At the time, Spanish practice after conquering a city was to keep most of its name intact. As the name was too large, they just kept the name as Mexico, and kept if for the last 490+ years.

The city of Tenochtitlan was founded on March 13, 1325 by the Aztec civilization. On August 13 of 1521 they were conquered by Spanish conquistadors led by Hernan Cortes. They found the capital of their new colony on the site of ancient Tenochtitlan. By 1821, when Mexico gained its independence from Spain, the capital of the former colony came to be known as Mexico City.

Similarities:

  • Mexico City as well as the ancient city of Tenochtitlan are some of the largest cities in the world during their respective times. Tenochtitlan had a population of 200,000 - 250,000 people, four times the population of London. Present-day Mexico City has a population of over 21 million people and is regarded as the third largest in the world.
  • Tenochtitlan had a very sophisticated network of canals and roads for the transportation of such quantity of people and the day-to-day goods they required. Present-day Mexico City has a vast network of roads, elevated highways, subway, roads and streets used for the movement of such amount of people and goods.
  • Both cities are considered to be the cultural, economic and political capitals of their respective countries.

Differences:

  • Mexico City has grown over 650 times the size of the original Tenochtitlan in terms of area (12 sq km / 5 sq mi vs. 7,854 sq km / 3,032 sq mi) and 84 times in terms of population.
  • Tenochtitlan was built on the marshy islands that dotted the Lake Texcoco. Present-day Mexico City no longer has such lake, as it has been dessicated due to the city's growth.
  • Tenochtitlan was a city built by the Aztecs and had many volcanic rock monuments and mud huts to house the population; Mexico City is a modern city with brick homes and steel and glass skyscrapers.
