Simply. Because one place on earth gets sunshine (day) the other side of the planet must have night. In other words, if its midday at 0 meridian, 90th meridian east has dusk, 90th meridan west has dawn and its midnight at 180th meridian either east or west. Time zones must have got invented otherwise in some places on earth 1pm would have been the middle of the night. However, 12 time zones is still not enought to keep up with the rotation of the planet. There are 39 time zones around the world
