The main goals of the Spanish explorers were to establish a foothold in the New World. In addition to acquiring new lands, the explorers set out to expand their empire. This was done by building trade and commerce with the local natives, along with converting many of them to Catholicism. Sadly, there were many native and Spanish conflicts that led to mass bloodshed across the continent.

Spanish explorers claimed, settled & defended most of what is the north American continent west of the Mississippi and south through MEXICO. This was the tradition of the day, to explore & take land from whoever was there, In this case the American Indians and some Frenchmen. The US bought Louisiana and much of the Spanish holdings along with Florida. We also went to war over the rest & wound up with most of the southwest which was US territory and later became states.
