Instead of being nomadic and moving from place to place, they had more permanent dwellings which started out as "pit houses". These simple houses were shallow holes in the ground with mud and sticks for roofs. They hunted and farmed for food and made pottery and baskets. If the wood for fires, animals, or land was used up, they would move. Later, they started to build homes above the ground which were many levels and very large. They relied more on farming and irrigation for their food. To defend themselves from their enemies, some Anasazi used the cliffs as homes. They built entire communities on ledges in the natural cliff walls or under cliff overhangs. They also relied heavily on farming since it was a permanent settlement. It is thought that the environmental change of prolonged droughts dried up the water supply and crops which forced the Anasazi cliff dwellers to move, but it could also have been to do other reasons as well.
