The Aztecs had several ways of obtaining food. The first was by growing it themselves. The Aztecs maintained floating gardens, called Chinampas, to grow their food near their primary city of Tenochtitlan. Because the city was located on the water and the gardens floated, the Aztecs could be placed under siege and still have access to their food.

Aztec people also hunted for their game food (birds, rabbits, deer, etc.) and also required their sub-city (or conquered cities) to provide tributes to them.
