In March 1817, A Ship capsized in the fog near Shore of Long Beach Island. Captain Stephen Willets hearing cries for Help, sent his crew in rowboats to help. They came across a wrecked and capsized schooner. There seemed to be no survivors, only corpses bobbing in the fridge sea. Captain Willets Stood on top of the overturned hull of the boat when he heard tapping from inside. He quickly grabbed an axe and hacked away at the barnacled hull. Inside was a young woman trapped. She spoke no English. But after being taken ashore, she expressed her gratitude by drawing a cross in the sand. No one knows her name or the name of the ship but the place of the shipwreck and the rescue have been known as "Ship Bottom" ever since.
