In learning Cherokee ways, young boys were taught by their uncles on their mother's side. Girls were taught by their mothers and female family members. As for learning the white ways, the Cherokee were the first to develop a written language, and many books were then published which they could read. Along with many other tribes, some of their children were soon rounded up and sent to white schools to "kill the Indian, save the child." The Cherokee also ran their own schools in Indian territory.
Everyone taught the children, in a more strict sense the grandparents (Grandmother) had the task of raising the children to a certain point. In Cherokee society the old ones knew more than the young, and while the young were doing more physical activity a role of caretaker developed for the older ones that could not. The Cherokee did not dispose of their wisest citizens, but instead used them to teach and fulfill a very vital role.
Native American children learned from the members of the tribe. This way their way of life until the government began reservation schools. The children taken from their families and tribe and forced to speak only English and not allowed to speak their native language . The boys hair was cut ( the braids were only cut because of the death of a close relative or parent) and they were made to wear suits. Girls were also not allowed native dress and forced to wear dresses. The children stayed at the school until they were 18 and then could go home, but they no longer knew their native language or ways. They were not accepted by the tribe nor were they accepted by white society. Many became outcasts for both. The government policy was wrong, discriminated, and ruined lives.
