Like all native American tribes, time was estimated by the position of the sun in the sky. Hours, minutes and seconds did not exist for the Cheyenne, they simply knew the sun was coming up, or nearing the mid point, or going down towards the west.

When white people showed them clocks and explained their use, the Cheyenne called clocks eshe'he, "the sun", since that had always been their time indicator.
