The Chinese government initiated a crackdown on the protesters on 3 June 1989, which resulted in what is widely known as the Tianamen Square Massacre. Chinese troops and armor such as tanks advanced toward Tianamen Square in Beijing, which was occupied by student protesters. Unarmed civilians attempted to barracade the advancing troops but were either run-over by tanks or shot down. It is unknown exactly how many casualties came as a result, but some experts estimate the toll count to range from 241 to as high as 2,600 with over 7,000 injuries.
