Dakota is not the name of a tribe but a group of tribes who all spoke the Dakota dialect. They were the Mdewakanton, Wahpekute, Wahpeton and Sisseton.
The names of these tribes give a clue as to their environment - Wahpekute means "shooters in the leaves", Wahpeton means "they live in the leaves".
These were not Plains tribes, but dwellers on the the more forested eastern margins of the Plains, living much like the eastern woodlands people. Their houses were not normally Plains tipis but bark-covered longhouses, made with gabled roofs rather than the curved roofs of the Iroquois. They were essentially sedentary farmers growing the usual crops of maize, beans, squash and tobacco. These crops were supplemented with hunting, mainly for deer and antelope, but occasionally buffalo - hunters would use tipis for shelter during these hunting trips.
