Dalmatians (later called Yugoslavs, now called Dalmatians again) emigrated to many places, including NZ, Australia and US. Like most emigrants, they wanted a better life, and freedom from persecution.
The first Dalmatians arrived in New Zealand in the 1880's.Which was also when the Austro-Hungarian empire ran Dalmatia, that's why Dalmatians were often called 'Austrians' in New Zealand. In 1929 Dalmatia was split in two, and half was renamed Yugoslavia. Around 1896, Dalmatians were growing grapes and making wine here. In the early 1900's, 2,000 gallons of wine were coming out of 14 vineyards per year. By 1955, most of the 80 vineyards were run by Dalmatians. Dalmatians brought in new types of grapes, and made a higher quality wine. In 1926 the Government declared the limit to be 3,500 Dalmatians (that is still only wives, fiancées, and young children.)
