The Gobi has several important historical trade routes that go into Mongolia. The Gobi is a natural border defense against attacks from marauding tribes and/or nations. The desert is vast enough to ensure that only the most well prepared enemies can sustain themselves in sufficient quantities to mount an attack.

Now a days the Gobi is important as a possible mineral resource area with finds of gold and copper located and possibly oil. The area has also been proposed to be "greened up" by adding irrigation and planting huge tree farms and other profitable space hungry farming ventures

the Gobi desert helps china by preventing the Mongolians to attack the ancient china. the harsh condition of the Gobi desert weakened the Mongolians trying to intrude china and even if they pass, the great wall of china will await them. this is how china prevented the Mongolians to invade them.
