It seems that the Grand Canyon was formed by two major geologic events occurring over the same very long period of time. Recent evidence indicates that the two billion years of the Earth's history that is now exposed began to be exposed some 17 million years ago as the Colorado River and it's tributaries flowed over the Colorado Plateau while it was itself being uplifted. As the land rose, the Colorado River - and it's tributaries - cut through to form the canyon as we know it today.
