The Great Ocean Road was built by 3000 returned servicemen (or "Diggers") as a war memorial for fellow servicemen who had been killed in the First World War. The idea for the road was suggested as far back as 1864. Surveying began in 1918 and construction took place between 1919 and 1932. Parts of the Great Ocean Road run around steep coastal mountains. These were the trickiest and the final sections to be built. In 1922 the section from Eastern View to Lorne was completed. In 1932 the section from Lorne to Apollo Bay was finished, thus completing the entire road. (Wikipedia ).

There were numerous small settlements along the southern Victoria coastline, but they could only be reached via rough tracks over the Otway ranges. The people in these settlements wished to have a route that would connect the communities, thus reducing their sense of isolation.
The timing for building the Great Ocean Road coincided with the return of thousands of ex-diggers (soldiers) from World War I. Building the road would give these men steady employment in a useful and valuable project.
Today, the road is regarded as the world's largest war memorial, and various plaques and arches honour the fallen soldiers of World War I.

∙ 14y agoThe Great Ocean Road closely follows the southern coastline of Victoria, Australia, providing a showcase of some spectacular scenery. It was also a fantastic engineering feat for its time, requiring back-breaking manual labour as the workers had only shovels, picks and horse-drawn carts to hew out the rocky cliffside - there was no machinery to help them. The road also linked the towns of Lorne and Geelong; originally, to get from one town to the other required a rocky, arduous coach trip to the train station at Winchelsea. The Great Ocean Road was constructed after World War I by returned servicemen. It was built to be a lasting memorial to soldiers and ANZACs who died fighting in the first World War.
