The capstone was sheaved in gold so it was probably stolen perhaps by one of the invading armies. By the time the British arrived it had gone so its one thing you can't blame the "Evil Empire" for, it's not in the British Museum.

Some authorities believe that the pyramid never had a capstone.

Why is the great pyramid only 450 feet tall today when it was originally 480 feet tall?

The Great Pyramid at Giza is about 30 feet shorter now than it originally was because of exposure to the elements. Over the thousands of years since its construction, weather and wind have eroded the limestone and capstone. The land has also shifted and caused some of the pyramid to sink. While 30 feet seems like a lot, the shrinking has occurred over many years.

How did the Great Pyramid of Giza changed over centuries?

First of all, local people stole the beautiful marble surface from the pyramids. Then, sandstorms have eroded and rounded off sharp corners in the stones. Also, Archaeologists have raided the pyramid tombs and have stolen many beautiful and valuable artifacts.

Why is the Great Pyramid 30 feet shorter than when it was built?

There was an outer layer of casing stones, made of highly-polished white limestone. Many of the casing stones were shaken loose by an earthquake in 1303, and these were subsequently carted away to build other structures in Cairo, there being no interest in re-attaching them at that time. Other casing stones were removed to build a mosque in the 1800s. Between the removed stones and subsequent fracturing, the top of the pyramid is now nearly 8 meters (26 feet) shorter than when completed.
