Why did the Greeks invent a catapult?

The catapult was actually meant to be a means of faster travel across the lands. However, pretty obviously really, the Greeks realised that anything flung in the air soon died when it came back down to the Earth. The catapult was instead adapted to throwing rocks, hot oil and so on and used in warfare instead to devastate enemy troops at a distance and collapse defences such as towers, walls and gates. Catapults were the first use of artillery in warfare.
