In October 2000, tragedy hit a small town in Hatfield just two months shy of the 130th anniversary of another rail crash in 1870 which happened in the same place. The 2000 Hatfield crash saw 70 people injured and four people unfortunately lost their lives. The crash caused a lot of damage and the spiraling costs of this eventually sent Railtrack (the railway infrastructure company) into administration and dissolve 10 years later. Railtrack were already trying to shake a bad reputation after two other crashes caused by them including the infamous crash at Ladbroke Grove in 1999 which killed 31 people and injured more than 500.
