The Hundred Years War devastated France. The war itself, as well as the destruction caused by the fighting, as well as famine, plague, and general lawlessness destroyed the French countryside. The nobility in France was destroyed. That allowed Louis XI to unite the country behind him, freed from the troubles of resistant, power-hungry nobles.
