Perhaps the most important development of the late 19th century in the United States was the coming of the Industrial Revolution and the changes it brought to American life. A new class of industrial engineers organized the land, labor, mineral resources, and capital of the nation, to maximize both production and profit.

This period saw the emergence of the corporation. New inventions, transportation and communication, and the use of the assembly-line techniques made possible the growth of huge, nationally based industries with enormous financial and political influence.

Post-Civil War America saw a revolution in the work and life patterns of its people, as well. A nation of small independent farmers, craft workers, and merchants became one of big business and factory workers. Immigrants and farmers alike poured into large industrial centers to compete for jobs. The streetcar introduced the possibility of urban sprawl, and so the cities grew. Even the mode of shopping was transformed, as the department store brought to consumers a wide variety of products at standardized prices.

As business grew, new forms of business, organization came into being-horizontal and vertical combinations, trusts, and holding companies.

Another response to the growth of the industrial power was the birth of national labor movement. From the Knights of Labor, American workers learned the advantages of organization for their own protection.
