The origin of the name Jeep is somewhat of a mystery. There is more than one explanation, but no one knows exactly how the name began. One popular idea is that the name jeep came from the military designation "GP" for "General Purpose." The original prototype produced by Ford was designated Ford Model GP. The G actually stood for Government and the P stood for 80" wheelbase. Another idea is a cartoon character called Eugene the Jeep who could go anywhere is where the name came from. Another theory is the word jeep is military slang of a new recruit. This was the first 1/4 ton 4wd vehicle the Army had ever seen so it was new. Other theories are that there term comes from a small Modine Tractor called Jeep. There are other theories. In my opinion it more than likely came from the name Ford gave it which was GP but I may be wrong.
