By allowing the new state of Kansas to vote on the slavery issue, it attracted every bully-boy in America (from both sides) to descend on this thinly-populated area, to intimidate the voters and cause confusion about the result.

There was much bloodshed, and this unhappy period is known as Bleeding Kansas.
