It originally cracked when first rung after arrival in Philadelphia 1752. The bell was used to summon lawmakers to legislative sessions and to alert citizens to public meetings and proclamations.
The crack's current appearance is the result of work that was done to prevent further damage. The opening was drilled out and a bolt was inserted at the top of the cutout to stabilize the metal.
