The source of the discontent was to be found in the Catholic church instead of in the cane fields. It was directed from the pulpit which gave it a moral underpinning that the Spanish government had a hard time dealing with.

The Mexican Revolution (1910-1921) was a conflict between the Mexican people - specially workers and peasants - against Mexican federal government troops, with human rights and land reform as the main drivers of such conflict. Most sources suggest between 1 million and 2 million people died during the course of that revolution.
