The New York Public Library's lion sculptures which stand outside its entrance have stood there since the library's inauguration in 1911. The two lions were specially commissioned for the library. Edward Clark Potter was paid to create the lions, through the recommendation of the pre-eminent sculptor Augustus Saint-Gauden. Since their installation, they have maintained an unwavering guard of the library.
The lion statues outside the New York Public Library are named Patience and Fortitude.
