It was a very frequently used trading route and also served as a transport method. It was also greatly used for farming purposes. The ground was highly nutritious because when the 'tide' went out, a shiny substance was left behind. His substance was called 'Silt' and it soaked into the soil.
The Nile river flooded more than the Jordan river so once after 7 or more weeks silt would be left behind and make perfect fertile soil and so the people would be able to plant all sorts of fresh crops for food.
Another reason how the Egyptians survived was by the fresh river. They were able to fish, get fresh drinking water, and they were able to trade with the people across the othe side of the river. (The water also watered the crops which also made them survive).
The nile river was helpful to ancient Egypt because that's where they got their food and water.
