Peter cooper invented the first steam locomotive
The first railroad built in the United States was Baltimore and Ohio Railroad which was called BandO. The first steam locomotive was nicknamed Tom Thumb.
The first steam powered locomotive to run on a railroad was invented (not discovered) by George Stephenson. It was completed and tested on July 25 1814.
All i know is that George Stephenson invented it.
The development of the steam locomotive had a positive impact on America. Goods could now be transported across the country more cheaply and quickly. There was also the added bonus of job creation.
The steam locomotive could go 18 mph, and could go faster and farther than boats.
