How did the Romans describe barbarians?

They were the nomadic peoples of Eurasia who threatened the security of the Empire. As they moved into the empire they became settled and civilised, eventually becoming Roman citizens until they took over the Western Empire.

The word "barbarian " is Greek for "others" and the Romans had a long relationship with the Germanic tribes and they along with the Celtic tribes were in the Roman army. The tribes paid tribute to the Romans for years to be able to live in "peace."
