A lot of it was because of currency issues. Right after World War II ended, all of Germany was using the Reichsmark. The Germans weren't allowed to manage it, though; the British, French and US handled it in the western sectors, the Soviets in the East. The Sovs decided to destabilize Germany economically and printed Reichsmarks so fast they lost value. The Western allies decided to create a new currency, the Deutschmark, that would be managed by the West Germans. This made the Soviets mad and, the day after the DM was rolled out, they set up a blockade of all rail and road traffic into or out of Berlin, and required water shipping to receive special Soviet permission. The intent was to force the West Germans to hand themselves and their land over to East German control, or to get rid of the Deutschmark. Unfortunately for them, the US and British Air Forces had enough cargo planes that by flying 24/7 they could adequately supply West Berlin until the Soviets gave up, which they did about a year later.
